    Location is stunning

Pretty old fashioned hotel, "elderly" audience and dito ambience!

The setting of the hotel was very rural and peaceful. Good access, by car, to the Border Region from Edingburgh to Berwick upon Tweed.

Because of the position of the hotel it was a little inconvenient to go anywhere else for dinner consequently a broader choice of menu in the Abbey Bar would probably be appreciated by clients staying longer than one or two nights.

The Hotel is not easy to find but worth the roundabout drive as the location is beautiful - very quiet with a lovely outlook on the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey and over the River Tweed. I arrived late in the afternoon and was given a warm welcome by the staff and the hotel dog and enjoyed a delicious dinner in the bar, as an alternative to the fine dining experience of the dining room. The food was excellent as was my glass of wine.

When I reached the dining room for breakfast, only one table was occupied. As it was a beautiful morning I asked to sit in the bay window so I could enjoy the view. I was given very short shrift and was told those tables were laid up for couples, so not available to me. I was then shown to the worst table in the room, laid for one person. As a single woman, I was appalled by this treatment and informed Reception when I left that my experience had completely tarnished what until then had been a most enjoyable stay. I have travelled all over the world without encountering this archaic attitude and found it disappointing to say the least. The tables I wanted to sit at were both still empty when I left.

The peaceful setting on the banks of the River Tweed with wonderfully scenic walks from the doorstep - especially useful for our active dog - made this holiday very relaxing. The staff are always welcoming and the food is of high quality. As our stay was for 9 nights, we greatly appreciated the room upgrade from standard to Abbey.

Just a small criticism: because our stay was for 9 nights, we had a lot of luggage (along with dog bed etc.), but were not offered any assistance with our baggage or shown our rooms. As we are aged 73 and 80, this would have been appreciated.

    Unfortunately not much!

Service standards very low and cleanliness not very good

Fantastic location and lovely room, the meal in the evening was excellent and not to pricey.

The wine with the meal was over priced the cheapest at £22.00 a bottle.

Position was good. Bed was comfortable.Lovely crisp white bedding. Easy access to Abbey. Extra pillows, tea bags and milk provided quickly and efficiently.

Very expensive. The hotel (apart from the dining room) was in need of repair and looked very worn and tired. Carpets in bedroom very flat and looked bare in places and stained. The housekeeping staff had obviously done their best but it must be hard to keep up standards. The window frames were bare wood in places. The tv was very dated (old tube type). The shower worked but was very cheap plastic and did not match the rest of the chrome fittings. Curtains very thin and did not block out the light. Why is there another curtain rail is this for a missing blackout curtain? Breakfast was very basic. Not very hot (plate was though?) and single slice of bacon was not cooked in the middle.

fantastic location, beautiful grounds, probably one of the best welcomes we have received on arrival at a hotel

rooms was lovely and bright but looked a bit tired. some of the furniture looked in need of replacing

Friendly reception and welcome.A Reasonable rom but the hotel seemed due for a spot of redecoration

Loved the location. Beautiful place and went for a long walk along the river. Liked the swimming pool. Staff on the whole were really friendly.

It was a little tired inside - all felt a bit dated. The food in the Tweed Restaurant was expensive, fussy and not particularly wonderful.

The suprise of a pool and sauna

Thought the Abbey room would have been larger

    Friendly, efficient staff

Tired - in need of a make-over in public areas and rooms. Small room. Expensive food for quality of hotel & dining rrom (this room not as billed - small tables and not expansive views)

The location is stunning. There are many walks nearby, and some fascinating local history. The rooms were well equipped and spacious, and the welcome friendly and efficient. Difficult to say what I liked best - the whole experience was most enjoyable.

My only quibble is that the mark-up on wine in the bistro was excessive

  • Couple

The view from the restaurant over looking the river and the breakfast was fantastic - non greasy and tastey fry-up.

Room was rather small for the price, shower flow was rubbish- shower head just needed descaling and hotel generally needed a bit of tlc.
